Peake, Arthur Samuel

Peake, Arthur Samuel
(1865–1929)
   Biblical Scholar and Ecumenist.
Peake was born in Leek, England, the son of a Primitive Methodist minister. He was educated at the University of Oxford and, after a period of teaching there, he moved to Manchester to be tutor of the Primitive Methodist College. Later, he also held a chair at Manchester University. He is remembered for his many works of popular biblical scholarship, in particular his one-volume commentary on the whole Bible. This has gone through many editions and, in a new revision, is still used by students today. He was also very committed to and worked hard for the reunion of the Methodist Churches.
